Le Petitou 2021

You may have heard of "garage wines"—yes, wines made in garages—and now you have the chance to try one of the best. How did this come about? Well, brother and sister Amélie and Sébastien d’Hurlaborde inherited a hectare of old Carignan vines from their grandfather. They started making wine in their garage in 2007, and since then, they've expanded both their operation and team. Amélie’s husband has joined in, and today, they farm seven hectares biodynamically. They even have a cave now, but they’ve kept the garage.

The label was designed by Amélie's children, Gabrielle and Paul—then just six and four years old—with help from friends. The name Petitou, meaning “the little one,” reflects both their playful contribution and the fact that this cuvée is the newest addition to the domaine’s range. Production averages 7,500 bottles. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan, the wine is made with minimal intervention, undergoing a short maceration and spending just nine months in vat. The result is a light, refreshing red that clearly bears the influence of the Mediterranean.
